Torpedo is a 4x a year literary journal / magazine / printed object / whatever we call them these days.

The most recent edition is dedicated to Richard Brautigan. His daughter, Ianthe, wrote the intro and was involved in selecting contributor pieces. The magazine contains works of Richard’s (stories from Revenge of the Lawn, excepts from In Watermelon Sugar, Trout Fishing in America, A Confederate General from Big Sur and others)

The Book Show is a radio program from Radio National / Australian Broadcasting Corp and last week’s (April 20 2009) show featured Torpedo in ‘Fishing for Richard Brautigan’.

The show features a brief interview with Ianthe Brautigan. The majority of the program is talking to the the founder/editor of Torpedo and contributors of the latest issue of torpedo

probably the most interesting thing (IMO) is ianthe’s quote regarding not feeling like she needs to protect her dad anymore.

she also briefly talks about teaching ‘trout fishing in america’ to one of her classes. how cool would it be to be in one of those classes!

thanks to Phil who posted this cool sketch of brautigan on his flickr site

the artist is justin kempton and he’s put together a series of authors & musicians as seen here in his writer’s mugs ebay site

there are some amazing pix on flickr representing ‘revenge of the lawn‘ by Camera Wences – all done in lego. they rock!!

scot is ‘a teacher, administrator, poet, and dreamer’ who blogs and puts his poetry online. he’s also a brautigan fan.

check out his site for – ‘hamburger cemetery’. written in response to richard’s suicide.

also check out his post on re-writing the ending.

You should have bought

oliva is working on an adaptation of the ‘abortion’. she’s aiming for an early 2008 debut (in san fran).

as part of the production, she is asking for book contributions. not copies of ‘the abortion’ but your very own book which you would like to add to a library like the one in richard’s story. she’s hoping to send the contributions to the brautigan library (which i think is still in limbo waiting for the SF public library to take on the project).

check out her page or read more about the library & various incarnations

well not the entire book but a short excerpt.

jarvis cocker, from the band pulp, has been podcasting. instead of promoting his latest album, he’s reading stories. you can download the tokyo montana express podcast or check out jarvis cocker’s myspace page or add this jarvcast rss feed to your itunes/podcast software.

two gallants are a SF based band. in a recent interview with SFist, they name richard as their fav SF author. in november they’re out touring europe so check them out!

i didn’t find out about this until after it was over (ran october 6-28) but hip pocket theatre in fort worth, texas adapted ‘in watermelon sugar’ into a play.

according to the theatre’s history page, this is the 4th time the book has been adapted into a play by johnny simons (co-founder of the theatre). first was in 1977 (the theatre’s first year), then 1986, again in 1998 and now 2006. sounds like it would be very cool.

anyone see it and want to post a review? (click on the ‘comments’ link next to the date in the blue box and then you’ll get a text box to type into)

one of the folks on our brautigan list, brian malow, is a comedian and was on ‘the late late show with craig ferguson a few weeks ago. you can see his performance on youtube. very funny! i loved the bit about breakups & registries!

one of our community members has published a book of poems called pina colada child.

over the past several months c.j. krieger has been sharing some of the poems in this book (and another one coming out soon – he must not sleep!) with the brautigan pages mailing list. they are typically short, sometimes quirky, sometimes bring a tear to the eye, sometimes you shouldn’t eat when you’re reading them (as you may find yourself spitting food as you laugh) and definitely bring to mind another writer we at the brautigan pages enjoy! :)

you can check out c.j.’s site, have a look inside the book or just hurry up & buy it!

below is an example and he’s also contributed gabby to our by fans section):

For The Skin

I told her olive oil
Was great for the skin
But she preferred Ranch Dressing
