THE LIBRARY OF UNWRITTEN BOOKS – a night in honour of Richard Brautigan’s The Abortion, or, library lovers and amateur writers unite!

here’s their description:

Don’t be put off by the title; you only need to be willing to expel stories, not babies! This swinging sixties classic is a parody of the romance genre in which a librarian falls in love with a traffic-stopping beauty. Love leads to sex, sex leads to babies, babies lead to Tijuana … but the real point is the sweet library that Brautigan invents, to which anyone can submit a story; sketched in crayon, daubed with jam, heaving with mathematical calculations. Anything goes! We’ll have a real-live librarian on hand to accept your manuscripts, along with the psychedelic strains of local shoegazers, a listening corner, Tijuana tequila times, human dioramas and more.

Below is a video of an art installation called ‘Brautigan 2009′. It was at the Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito California. From what I can tell, it looks like the exhibit was there in about June of 2009.

Chris Sollars is the artist behind the sculpture/multi-media installation. He has a page with lots of pix & info on his site.

If you’re in baltimore, MD, USA, you might want to check out this – waterfall (for richard brautigan). It runs til Feb 27 or March 27 depending on what website you read. UPDATE: confirmed it’s Feb 27th.

The artist, evan la londe, credits living in upstate New York, growing up in the woods and Brautigan’s ‘Knock on Wood (Part Two)’ from Trout Fishing in America as the inspiration for this piece. Of that story, Evan says:

The story is filled with a magic that I love; it’s phenomenological and metaphorical all at once.

There was a temporary installation of this piece last October in Prettyboy Reservoir, outside of Parkton MD. Now it has moved to Baltimore to an art gallery called School33. Details of the venue: school33

Evan is currently working on a video of the installation. He’s got some cool pix showing the build on Flickr.

New book: Following Richard Brautigan

There’s a new book out March 31st by Corey Mesler that’s inspired by Richard.

Following Richard Brautigan is a coming of age story and a road trip and a tale of love and so much more. You can pre-order it at Amazon (link below. )

There’s also a visual trip (video) of Corey reading the first chapter(s). I think he sounds a bit like Richard.

Interview with Virginia Aste

Arthur Magazine has an interview with Virginia Aste – Richard Brautigan’s first wife.

Married in 1957, separated in ’62 and divorced in ’70, she looks back at their time together.

Now working as a substitute teacher in Hawaii, this interview gives a little insight into Richard & his writing, what it was like in the 1960s in San Francisco as well as her relationship with Richard.
