how do i find things on this website?
first, you can always search the website. i am working on improving search because it’s not the best. for example, it won’t find anything anyone has posted in a comment. if you do not receive any search results, you might want to double check by looking at the navigation on the right side.

there are 2 main types of navigation to move you around the site. above the top image of richard, there’s a few main links (including home). on the right side column, there’s a box entitled ‘go here’ and lists the main areas of the website.

when you click ‘home’, you will see all the latest posts.

what is a post?
these are message which i, the owner of the brautigan pages, have put on the website.

what is a category?
towards the bottom of the right side navigation, there is a chunk of text that says ‘categories’. this is one of the ways this website is organised. basically categories are a way to help you navigate to what you want to read.

what is rss?
at the very bottom of the right side navigation is an area called ‘rss’. rss is a way to receive updates from a website. wikipedia can tell you all about it and suggest ways to use RSS. fyi, i’m addicted to using bloglines.

how do i join the mailing list?
to join our e-mail list, go to this link. in late 2005 i was having some problems with the list but i think they’re fixed. if you have problems, give a yell.

how do i post a reply to something on this site?
if you’d like to add a comment (ie a reply) to the site, you can. if there’s a text box on the page, just type away (it would be at the bottom of the page). if there isn’t a text box, then click the title of the post (right next to the blue box with the date) and the new page should have the text box at the bottom.

fyi, there are other items you can click which let you add a comment. depending on what page you’re looking at, you might see some text on the right which says ‘do more’ and then says you can ‘leave a response’. you can also leave a reply by clicking the words ‘no comments’ or ‘1 comment’ (or whatever number is there) which is in red near the blue box with the date.

are the brautigan pages website and e-mail list different?
yes!

the e-mail list is full of fans around the world discussing richard and his works. you need to subscribe to the list in order to read those messages and to participate in the discussion. sometimes i will use content from e-mails from the mailing list on the website but 99% of the e-mail list content is ONLY on the e-mail list.

my intent with the website is to provide a place where people can leave public notes and participate without joining the mailing list. the content on the website, might get repeated on the e-mail list but most likely not.

why do i need to register on the website?
if you would like to post notes (which are called ‘comments’) on the website, i ask that you register. this is to cut down on spam on the website. it also lets me get in touch with you if there’s a reason (if you ask a question or something). your email address will NOT be shown on the brautigan pages website but if you enter a url, it will be linked to. if you’re unsure of what i’m talking about, have a look at any of the posts with comments.

is my username and password the same for both the website and the e-mail list?
sorry but because i’m using two separate types of software for the e-mail list and the website, you will have two DIFFERENT usernames and passwords. i know that sucks but it’s one of those things we’ll have to live with.

when you register on the website, you supply your e-mail address and pick a username. your password will be sent to your e-mail address. if you forget your password, you can have it emailed to you again.

when you subscribe to the e-mail list, you enter your e-mail address and pick a password. if you ever want to change anything about your e-mail subscription (like switching between individual e-mails and digest version or unsubscribing), you need this password to make the change. if you forget your password, that’s ok. just go to the VERY BOTTOM of this page and enter the e-mail address where you receive the brautigan e-mails. A new page will load and near the top there’s a button that says ‘send me my password’. a copy of your password will be sent to that e-mail address.

of course if you’re really confused you can ask me for help. 🙂

how do i subscribe to the rss feed of this site?
if you are new to rss, the wikipedia has lots of info.

if you need a reader for rss, check wikipedia for a list. fyi, i’m a fan of bloglines.com.

and the url you want for the brautigan pages rss feed is: (the link is in the lower right side navigation on the website).
