if you’re looking for academic or lit crit links for brautigan works, I’ve just found ebsco host seems to have reworked their site in a useful way.

Here’s a link to a 1982 work entitled “Romance & Parody in Brautigan’s The Abortion” and it contains a list of related articles plus you can search on brautigan and discover 28 other articles.

Recently I discovered this song from an early 90s Greek indie band called ‘Richard Brautigan’.

The BBC is airing a ‘series of films about how humans have been colonised by the machines we have built.’ and obviously the title is directly taken from (& attributed to) Richard Brautigan’s poem of the same title.

For those of you outside the UK, I recommend checking out the film maker Adam Curtis’s blog & the BBC site for the show.

Blog post with trailer

The 3 episodes are:

Episode 1 – Love & Power – aired May 23 211 on BBC2. This episode focuses on Ayn Rand & the silicon valley entrepreneurs which both had versions of the perfect world which were ill fated due to power & love (i’m paraphrasing the episode description here… I haven’t seen the show).

Episode 2 – The Use & Abuse of Vegetational Concepts – aired May 30, 2011 on BBC2. This episode focuses on modern scientific ideas of nature & the self regulating ecosystem.

Episode 3 – The Monkey in the Machine & the Machine in the Monkey – aired June 6 2011 on BBC2. This episode focuses on scientists Hamilton & Dawkins & the ‘selfish gene’.

completely missed this as it was held on July 1st but maybe someone went & can post a comment on the evening.

According to Bozeman Daily Chronicle, Greg read from his latest collection of sonnets at the Elk River Book store.

I’m a bit late in posting this but Jan 30th was Richard Brautigan’s birthday. He would have been 76. In the video below his daughter, Ianthe, reads “One Afternoon in 1939″ from Revenge of the Lawn. Fantastic video!!

Thanks to Marc Campbell for posting this!

I often seem to try to catch up on things over the Christmas holidays & one of the items i wanted to read was this NY Times article from Feb 2010, A Homecoming for Richard Brautigan, about the event held at Vesuvio’s in San Fran earlier this year.

If you haven’t gotten around to reading it, here’s your nudge. Best wishes & holiday cheer to all! jen

cute video!!

that’s the question that came thru to the Stranger (from Seattle/Portland USA area) and was answered by Paul Constant in the Books section. He had a few suggestions for what’s brautigan like.

I’m surprised there’s no mention of Tom Robbins as that’s who I always mention first (and know a lot of others do as well). But there’s 9 authors mentioned so lots to have a look at. I’ve only read one of the 9 (Nicholson Baker) & not the book mentioned so I’ve got some reading to do ;)

Who would you add to the list? Have you read these 9 authors?

If you’re looking for a Spanish version (Castilian) of Trout Fishing in America, here you go – La pesca de la trucha en América from Blackie Books in Barcelona.

mark your calendars for October 7th!!

richard’s novel, the abortion: an historical romance 1966, takes place in a library where anyone can contribute a book as long as they deliver it by hand (& have written it!). it’s a great (pre-internet) idea where anyone can be a ‘published’ author with their book sitting on a library shelf.

such a great idea that in the early ’90s, Todd Lockwood set one up in Vermont. It was around 2005 when the library needed a new location & (I think) Todd stopped accepting books. Apparently he has about 350-400 books.

there was talk for a while of the Presidio branch of the San Francisico public library system bringing Todd’s library there. after all, the Presdio branch was the setting for richard’s book & people often thought it functioned as an abortion style library. for whatever reasons that didn’t end up happening but Todd’s library is getting a new home next month!

The Clark County Historical Museum in Vancouver Washington (USA) will become the permanent host of the Brautigan Library!

Oct 7th is the opening with Dr. John Barber presenting on ‘The Brautigan Library Challenge’ and both Ianthe Brautigan & Todd Lockwood in attendance.

If you’re anywhere nearbys, this sounds like a great event! If anyone gets pix, I’d love to link to them or post them for you. Also feel free to comment here!
